Upper Plenty Primary School acknowledges the Wurundjeri People as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land on which our school is located. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the community.
We recognise their continuing connection to the land, waters and culture, and we are committed to working together for a more just and inclusive future.
Upper Plenty Primary School is located on the traditional lands of the Wurundjeri People. The Wurundjeri people are an Australian Aboriginal people of the Woiwurrung language group, in the Kulin nation. They are the traditional owners of much of the present location of Melbourne. Their relationship with the land extends back tens of thousands of years to when their creator spirit 'Bunjil' formed their people, the land and all living things.
The Wurundjeri People take their name from the Woiwurrung language word ‘wurun’ meaning the Manna Gum (Eucalyptus viminalis) which is common along ‘Birrarung’ (Yarra River), and ‘djeri‘, the grub which is found in or near the tree. Wurundjeri are the ‘Witchetty Grub People’ and our Ancestors have lived on this land for millennia.
